Active Supply & Design Assist Manchester Based Storage World in Opening New Self Storage Facility
24th June 2020
We’re delighted to report that we have helped a Manchester based storage firm open a brand new self storage location right next to Manchester Airport.
Back in 2019, we were approached by Storage World to ascertain as to whether we could support them in their ambitious plans to open a third store in the Greater Manchester area, a 450 unit facility to provide both storage and office solutions for hundreds of individuals and businesses.
In order to make the most of every inch of the available space, it was critical that the entire layout of the facility was considered in the finest of detail. This included ensuring that each storage unit had good access, each level had lift access and that there was to be a logical flow as how staff and customers would move around the space.
This is where the expertise Active Supply & Design came to the fore. We were able to partner with Storage World to both consider and design a workable layout for the new facility and also to supply and fit mezzanine floor levels across the new facility. This allowed Storage World to make full use of the space and height, ultimately giving them more capacity to provide a maximum number of units to customers. In order to include the third tier of mezzanine flooring, which made the project a lot more attractive to investors, it was necessary to move away from more normal fire protection methods as heights did not allow. Reducing the depths of each mezzanine floor whilst still achieving the required fire protection allowed for the third level to be included, a feat calling on the years of experience the Active team possess.
Our work included:
- Design, manufacture and installation of the mezzanine flooring.
- Design, manufacture and installation of storage units.
- Considering access to and from all units, offices, lifts, corridors and internal/external entry points.
- Handling both building regulations approval and all electrical works.
Storage World in Hale Barns & Wilmslow (by Manchester Airport) officially opened its doors in January 2019 and we were proud to be a key partner involved in making the big opening possible.
Commenting on the partnership, Managing Director at Storage World, Marc Studholme, said:
"Anticipating the challenges that would come with this project, we chose to partner with Active Supply & Design as we were confident that their skill and expertise could help us to overcome many of these challenges.
Customer demand is far more immediate in a location like this right next to Manchester Airport, and Active Supply & Design ensured that the design, supply and install of the mezzanine flooring we required went without a hitch.
We expect the store to be a great success and the whole team here would like to express our thanks to Active Supply & Design for helping us to make it all happen.”
Commenting on the installation, Gareth Williams, part of the project management team here at Active, said: "Active Supply & Design were thrilled to win the contract for the latest exciting Storage World project in Hale Barns, close to Manchester Airport. Using innovative products and techniques, we were able to come up with a unique design for the mezzanine whilst meeting the fire rating required.
Such a design required some critical thinking regarding head room and corridor layout; specifically on the top floor, and this was overcome by utilising appropriate ramps and exacting measurements to ensure all adhered to building regulations. This design also focused on maximising the available escape distances in order to reduce the number of staircases to an absolute minimum which in turn increased the lettable space available.
With communication between Ask Active and Storage World being paramount, a room layout including lockers, standard sized self storage rooms and commercially friendly bulk storage rooms was created to optimise the ability to house any self storage tenant that walked through the facility’s doors.
As with all facilities, the wow factor was an important issue for visiting self storage tenants so that they were genuinely impressed with every aspect of the store, especially the security of their possessions. In line with this, plasterboard walling and tall aluminum kick plate was utilised in the main entrance, as well as a first floor atrium to give a further feeling of space, ensuring that first impressions really did count!”
