UK SSA Survey 2015

22nd May 2015

UK Self Storage Association Annual Survey

The SSA UK in association with Cushman and Wakefield  launched their annual survey this week in both London and Manchester. The survey is based on the responses of 73 self storage operators across the country representing 443 self storage facilities equating to over 60% of the total self storage space in the UK. Also included are the results from a Demand Survey of the general public carried out by YouGov on behalf of the SSA UK.

The survey contains some encouraging statistics relating to the UK self storage industry in what is the most comprehensive study of the industry to date. Some of the major points in the survey are:

  • Average occupancy remains stable at 70% as rental returns increase by over 7%.
  • Operators are more optimistic about the outlook in 2015 with nearly 80% expecting improved profitability.
  • 67% of people surveyed could not name a self storage brand.
  • 55% of the public have little or no knowledge of the self storage product, indicating significant room for expansion.
